Protecting your land… and our Bay
The connection between Bryan and Sons’ Living Shoreline team and your property, is the same as the connection between what makes a sound choice and a successful project. Living Shorelines, the redevelopment of wetlands and marsh areas, are also projects that benefit the environment, create natural wildlife habitats and help to protect from storm run off and tidal surges. In recent years, the Chesapeake Bay has had a number of destructive storms. It is likely we will continue to see more storms of this nature in our future.
Given the devastating effects, remediation of eroded shorelines and buffers just makes good sense. Contracting the experienced experts from Bryan and Sons to help preserve and protect your investments in your home and the environment, makes even better sense.
We have the knowledge and experience
At Bryan and Sons, we understand the importance of site specific design. Every project requires a detailed analysis of existing resources and potential liabilities. Through this analysis, we generate sustainable designs for quiet coves and high energy sites. In addition to stone revetments and jettys we are suggesting the incorporation of Living Shorelines to many of our clients. Living Shoreline design lies at the intersection of ecology and engineering.
Living Shoreline services include:
- Tidal and non-tidal delineation
- Natural resource mapping
- Design and Permitting
- Construction
- Maintenance
- Monitoring

An example of shoreline erosion with previous unsuccessful interventions
The many environmental benefits of Living Shorelines has led to their utilization in increasingly dynamic settings. Years of experience have taught us that great Living Shoreline design lies at the intersection of ecology and engineering. At Bryan and Sons, we understand the importance of site specific design. Every project requires a detailed analysis of existing resources and potential liabilities. Through this analysis, we generate sustainable designs for quiet coves and high energy sites.
Our strength lies in our ability to design and build successful projects in challenging situations…
When shoreline erosion is presented to us, often times it is because the owner has tried other methods with poor results. One the biggest reasons Living Shorelines are working where other erosion “plans” have failed, is because in working with nature, as nature intended, preservation and propagation occur.
By carefully analyzing the shoreline, areas of previous remediation and their outcomes, in conjunction with tidal patterns and indigenous plantings, a plan is developed to not only preserve but to ideally, enhance and protect the shoreline.
To do all of this, expertise is needed for each aspect of solving the problem. Evaluating existing conditions, previous applications for prevention of erosion, soil conditions and sampling, local horticulture, storm run-off, wetlands restoration and recreation for both tidal and non-tidal areas. It is from all of these, sound solutions are developed to mitigate current losses, and improve all of the above areas. This is where we have the experience and know-how.
